How to avoid TOO EXPENSIVE! when enchanting?

Hi,

I'm very confused on how the enchanting mechanic works. I like to get perfect enchantments on my items, and sometimes it'll let me, other times it won't. I just wasted 37 levels getting a Sharpness V book on a Diamond Sword I was working on, and now it won't let me add any more enchantments to it (still missing Knockback, Fire Aspect and Mending). In the past, I've also created a book with all the maximum enchantments for a Sword on it, only to find out it's too expensive to use on anything.
I know it's possible to get every maximum enchantment on a Diamond Sword, as I already managed to get a few of them, but I don't know what the best order of doing things is. Is there some best works-everytime-way of enchanting a perfect Sword?

Please help.
Thanks!

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
